David Letterman was born on April 12th, 1947, in Indiana. He is the second born in a family of three.

His father, Harry Letterman, was a florist while his mother, Dorothy Letterman, was a church secretary.

Letterman attended Broad Ripple High School.

After graduating from Broad Ripple, Letterman joined Ball State University to pursue a course in Radio and television.

He graduated in 1969.

Letterman started his career in broadcasting as a newscaster at WBST, a college radio station for students. He was later fired for no considering classical music.

After graduating, he landed two jobs; one in WNTS as a radio talk show host and the other on Indianapolis TV station as an anchor and a weatherman up until 1975 when he decided to move to Los Angeles.

While in Los Angeles, he began performing comedy. He also took part in many plays, including Peeping Time– 1978, Mary, Mork, and Mindy, The $20,000 Pyramid, Password Plus, Hollywood Squares, The Gong Show, Celebrity Cooks, 90 Minutes Live, The Mike Douglas Show, Airplane and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

David Letterman was in June 1980, given his show called The David Letterman Show. The show, however, lasted for a few months before it was canceled due to poor ratings

In 1982, in CBS, Letterman launched his new late-night talk show. He stayed in CBS with the same show until 2014 when he announced his retirement.
